Hey there, cannabis enthusiasts! Curious about how the epic 4:20 came into existence? Let's head back to 1971 San Rafael, California, and dive into the captivating origins of this iconic high holiday.
Imagine five daring teenagers on a wild quest to uncover a secret cannabis grow, armed with nothing but an enigmatic treasure map. Sounds like a primo setup for a stoner flick, doesn't it? But this is an authentic slice of cannabis history.
These fearless youngsters dubbed themselves the "Waldos," inspired by their chosen hangout – the wall outside their school. Balancing their passions for cannabis and sports, they'd meet after school and athletic practices, either by the wall or near a statue of Louis Pasteur on the school property. United, they'd engage in the timeless puff-puff-pass ritual and brainstorm their plan to find the mythical cannabis treasure.
To covertly remind each other of their clandestine gatherings, they'd whisper "4:20 Louis" in the school's corridors. Eventually, "Louis" was dropped, giving birth to the now-famous 4:20 – a secret code for cannabis lovers to communicate without alerting parents or educators.
But how did this low-key phrase become an international sensation? As luck would have it, the Waldos had ties to The Grateful Dead, and the band's concerts and festivals played a crucial role in popularizing the term. The story of the Waldos gained even more momentum when it was published in High Times magazine by writer and cannabis rights activist Steven Hager in May 1991.
From that point on, 4/20 has become an indispensable part of both counterculture and cannabis culture. Canadian cannabis icon and entrepreneur Marc Emery, also known as the "Prince of Pot," shared his thoughts on the significance of the cannabis holiday: "4/20 transcends from a symbol of protest to a celebration of triumph, a celebration of our unwavering connection with this remarkable plant. Regardless of the progress we make, it will always be a day to honour and rejoice."
Though the Waldos' quest for the hidden cannabis crop ultimately proved fruitless, they stumbled upon something far more valuable: enduring cannabis fellowship and the creation of the most legendary, celebrated, and enticing term and holiday in cannabis culture – 4:20! At Honeycomb Cannabis we pay tribute to this enthralling history and the thriving community it has fostered.
